Who We Are
People and Carnivores is a small, Montana-based nonprofit that works to prevent human-carnivore conflicts. For more than 15 years, we have designed, deployed, and monitored loss prevention tools. People and Carnivores is committed to keeping you, your property, and your livestock safe, and large carnivores in the wild.
Where We Work
Our conflict prevention specialists are based in Columbia Falls and Anaconda, MT, making it possible for them to travel throughout much of Northwest and Southwest Montana.

We built an electric fence around this beekeeper’s hives. The fence can be moved or taken down without much trouble (as the beekeeper occasionally moves his hives or needs to get into the area with a truck), but can also be kept up year-round.

Ahead of spring calving, we helped this landowner put up (and later, take down) fladry. The landowner didn’t experience any wolf conflicts while the fladry was up.

A grizzly bear wandered through this area, so we provided this landowner with a temporary electric fence to go around his chicken yard, along with a Critter Gitter alarm to hang on the coop door and a bear-resistant garbage can to store chicken feed. The bear moved on shortly after.

We outfitted this young livestock guardian dog with a tracking collar. The collar helped him learn his home range and helped the landowners ensure he wasn’t wandering outside pastures or near roads.

We added offset electric wires to an existing fence around this orchard to keep bears from eating the fruit and damaging the trees.

We provided a homeowner with this bear-resistant garbage can, which successfully kept bears from getting at trash.

After a bear got into the pig feed in this pasture, we helped build a permanent electric fence to keep bears moving.

We helped this landowner find livestock guardian dog and figure out how to best bond the puppies to their livestock.

We gave bear-resistant garbage cans to a ranch to store attractants, but one particular bear learned how to break into the cans. To stop this bear from damaging other cans or property, we decided to try electrifying one. It worked. After getting a shock from this can, the bear didn’t damage any other cans and moved on.
