Livestock Guardian Dogs

Livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) stay with the group of animals they protect as a full-time member of the flock or herd. The presence of LGDs is usually enough to ward off some predators, though the dogs may also attack or fight with predators to protect the flock.

They’ve been used for centuries by livestock producers in Europe and Asia and have become more popular among producers in the US in recent decades. Successful LGD programs take time and dedication to develop, starting with careful genetic selection, pup socialization, and proper deployment with livestock. To make the most of this promising coexistence tool, we work with breeders and importers who are also livestock producers–people who clearly understand the role and needs of LGDs.
